Why Might Dogs Get Bad Breath?

Many dog parents assume that dogs have bad breath and consider it to be normal, but usually it is a sign of another problem. If you find out that your dog has bad breath, it is time to investigate and find out the root cause of the problem and take necessary actions for it.

Below mentioned are a few of the most important reasons ‌dogs suffer from bad breath:

  • The very first reason ‌dogs suffer from bad breath is that it is caused by bacteria-laden plaque. This plaque is formed on their teeth throughout the day. It is formed as a combination of saliva, bacteria and food particles. The bacteria combine to coat the teeth and can accumulate beneath the surface of the teeth. Eventually the plaque hardens and becomes tartar. Plaque and tartar is not just an issue because it builds up and harms the teeth, it can cause other health problems.
  • Bad breath can also be because of an oral injury in dogs. Objects like hair, sticks and cloth can get wedged between the teeth or in gums and can lead to oral injury. Which will eventually gather bacteria on it and lead to bad oral breath. If your furry companion doesn’t get medical attention, the wound might get more and more malodorous.
  • Apart from dental hygiene problems, there are other reasons dogs can have bad breath. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a health condition that affects some dogs with diabetes and may cause acetone-like breath. If a dog has kidney problems, their bad breath can smell like urine. Lastly, gastrointestinal disorder can also cause bad breath in dogs.

Dogs with bad breath may have several other signs that point towards the underlying cause.

  • Redness of the gums (gingivitis)
  • Decreased appetite
  • Tartar buildup on teeth
  • Bleeding gums
  • Weight loss
  • Excessive drooling
  • Reluctance to chew food or toys
  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea

If your furry companion is showing any such symptoms, then it is time to take care of their health problems. You should immediately take them to the vet, setting your dental insurance for pets in play, because they will start performing physical examinations on your dog and take necessary action to treat any issues.. Sometimes in day-to-day life a pet’s dental hygiene can get neglected, and if that happens dental insurance for pets will help combat the cost of medical conditions that arise from that.

Keeping a regular check on your pets’ teeth ensures better health, safety and security overall for your pet. Presently, many pet parents get pet insurance because it provides extensive coverage like accidents, illness and dental, so pet parents don’t have to worry about the expenses. If you are one of those pet parents who already has pet insurance NZ, perhaps it is time to elevate your cover to include dental coverage? If you are someone who hasn’t yet opted for pet insurance NZ then seriously consider getting it soon and includedental coverage for your dog. Your dog will thank you for it.
